Board Savvy CEO

The CEO is the key to an effective board and is most responsible for board effectiveness. Why?

  • The CEO is the primary information resource for the board. The CEO guides the board’s deliberations. The board will make decisions and even choose which issues to discuss based on the information it receives from the CEO.
  • The CEO is the only person directly hired by and directly reporting to the board and therefore is the direct link between governance decisions and the actual implementation of board policy.
  • As a full-time, paid professional, the CEO is the person who must take the most responsibility for developing and maintaining an effective board.
  • The CEO should work with the board to ensure there is an emergency succession plan in place.
