In this section you will find resources for founding groups in the charter application phase through doors opening of the school.
Stages of Board Development During the Founding Phase
To understand the board development phases of the “charter starter” process please take at look at this resource, which outlines the key board development actions you should be taking at each milestone of the process:
Stage #1: Create An Outstanding Founding Board
Recommended steps:
- Take the Board Composition and Board Recruitment assessments in BoardOnTrack
- Look at the recommended resources in the governance and training sections of the Resources Tab
- Review BoardOnTrack Defined for Board Composition and Board Recruitment
- Review Founding Board Diagnostic Tool which will help you better understand what you are aiming for.
Stage #2: Submit Your Charter Application
Recommended steps:
Writing Governance Sections of the Charter Application
- To complete the governance sections of your charter application take all of the assessments in the Assessments Tab to get a sense of the “high bar” and tips on how to answer these questions.
Creating an Initial Set of Bylaws
- The Board Structure Assessment and Resources will help you with this task.
Educating Full Board
Typically different trustees and the lead founder will all be writing sections of the charter application. It is important that prior to the charter being submitted the full board understands the key components of the charter and feels comfortable with it.
Note: A very big thank you to Peter Boyle and the founding board of Western School of Science and Technology for generously sharing these examples with BoardOnTrack community.
Stage #3: Pre-Authorization Phase
There is often a significant amount of lag time between the charter being submitted and charter contract being awarded.
