Traditionally, a Nominating Committee focuses exclusively on the recruitment of new board members. However, it has become an industry standard in nonprofit management for boards to fold the Nominating Committee into a broader-reaching committee called a Governance Committee (also called a Committee on Trusteeship). In addition to finding and recruiting trustees (the work of nominating), the Governance Committee also looks at the overall health of the board and how well it performs its governance functions, which include:
- Conducting an annual evaluation of the full board and individual trustees
- Succession planning for trustees and officers
- Finding, recruiting, and screening board candidates
- Conducting an orientation for new trustees
- Conducting exit interviews with departing board members
- Organizing board retreats and board training
