What if our board is too small for committees? Should we do things as a committee of the whole?
Active, engaged committees are a central part of how an effective board gets a great amount of work done and has the time and expertise to dive deeper into substantive issues.
If you lack enough trustees to have full committees, start with “committees of one” to build in the accountability around goals. Ask each committee to create a committee expansion goal.
BoardOnTrack highly recommends having non-board members serve on committees to help you develop a broader bench of expertise and as a way to try people out before offering them a seat on the full board.
