In BoardOnTrack lexicon, the term committee denotes a standing sub-group of the board of trustees, devoted to a permanent major area of the board’s work (academic excellence, development, finance, governance). Typically, committees are named in the organization’s bylaws. We recommend having as few standing committees as possible.
Everything else should be a task force. A task force is temporary, and can come and go, be created or dissolved without having to amend the organization’s bylaws. Task forces are devoted to specific purposes and dissolve when their goal is completed, such as a New Building Task Force charged with purchasing a new building for the school.
