General Purpose
The purpose of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee (DEI) is to spearhead your efforts in diversity, equity, and inclusion, and to keep your efforts on course. The members of the DEI committee should serve as ambassadors to promote awareness and educate the board on DEI-related issues pertaining to your organization.
Role of the DEI Committee
The DEI Committee is commissioned by and accountable to the Board of Trustees. This committee’s primary role is to ensure the organization has policies that promote an inclusive environment that honors diversity and promotes equity in the classroom and workplace. The objective is that all students and employees can have a sense of belonging regardless of their backgrounds. This committee will support the CEO in efforts to develop organization-wide training and programs and also to devise clear and consistent measures to monitor progress.
Appointments And Composition
Appointments of the chair and members of the DEI Committee shall be made annually by the chair of the Board with the advice and consent of the Board and the CEO and in accordance with the bylaws.
The chair of this committee shall be a member of the Board of Trustees.
Members of this committee shall be members of the Board of Trustees, subject to the conditions stated in the bylaws. Additional committee members may be appointed and need not be members of the Board of Trustees.
Responsibilities
It is important to note that this is a governance function, not a management function, and it is anticipated that the CEO will have a great deal of input into the work and composition of this committee. The committee’s main role is to ensure that a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion is established within the organization and communicated to the board so that it may approve annual goals and resources to support these initiatives.
