Yes! This is an excellent idea. Asking people to serve on a committee for six months to a year before being nominated to the full board is a great way for the candidate to learn more about the organization and for the board to get to know the candidate and determine whether they really will be a good addition to the board.
You will be doing the candidate a favor by choosing this path.
Governing a charter school is fairly complex. Typically, the committee will be drawing on the candidate’s professional skills and comfort zone. It is a great way to ease them into the organization.
You also will be doing the organization a favor.
A trial period allows for testing of the candidate’s ability to follow through on tasks, make the necessary time commitment, etc.
Then, when they're nominated to the full board, you will truly know the candidate.
