Agendas: Who should create the board meeting agenda?

The agenda should be created by the board chair and the CEO well in advance of each meeting.

Ideally, within 48 hours of the completion of a board meeting, the board chair and organization’s leader should debrief the previous board meeting and draft the agenda for the next meeting.

Planning the agenda far in advance will help ensure that the meeting’s content focuses on the strategic, not the reactive.

The board chair and the CEO should use a team approach in designing the agenda.

There should also be a procedure by which board members can submit items they would like to be considered for the upcoming agenda.

Ideally, the board chair and school leader will have created and shared a draft board calendar for the entire year and will be preparing agendas from these prioritized items, not merely reacting to whatever is immediately in front of them.
