Introduction
Charter school boards play a vital role in ensuring the success of their charter school or Charter Management Organization (CMO). The board holds the charter, not the charter leader, and at the end of the day, the board is responsible for ensuring that the school/ CMO fulfills its mission and goals in the charter. Thus, hallmarks of high-performing charter schools include setting meaningful goals for the board and their organizations, monitoring progress towards these goals, and making data-driven decisions when performance is not on-track.
