The CEO should draft a written definition of academic excellence for your organization, receive input from the board’s Academic Excellence committee, and then ultimately have this definition approved by the full board.

Some common elements used to define academic excellence of successful charter schools include:
- Having every student demonstrate that they are “on pace for college” on an objective assessment every year.
- For students not yet “on pace for college,” having them demonstrate significant progress (e.g., more than one year’s growth in a single year) towards being so on an objective assessment each year.
- Significantly outperforming schools who serve a student population similar to yours and/or the highest performing schools nationally, who serve a similar population to yours.
In addition, many schools use internal rubrics to measure progress towards other key elements. Search for our sample Instruction and Culture Rubrics in our resources.
