CEO Evaluation Process Overview

When you create a new evaluation, you’ll be taken to your evaluation process checklist.

We’ve designed this process based on the experiences of the hundreds of charter boards we’ve worked with nationwide, as well as BoardOnTrack founder and CEO Marci Cornell-Feist's extensive knowledge of best practices in charter governance.

The right steps are all laid out for you as shown below and in BoardOnTrack.

The stages of our CEO Evaluation process are:

1. Preparation

Create the CEO Support and Evaluation Committee
This step is complete when the board chair creates the CEO Support and Evaluation Committee with members and a committee chair.

Select the Survey

This step is complete when the Evaluation Coordinator chooses the evaluation survey to use.  You’ll be presented with a list of all the evaluations in your system as well as the standard BoardOnTrack evaluation.  You can choose the survey from any evaluation as the starting point for your new evaluation.  You can also choose to start with an empty survey

Customize the Survey

In this step, you’ll make any changes you want to in your chosen survey, or create a new survey if you’ve chosen to start from scratch.

2. Self-Evaluation

Start the CEO Self-Evaluation

This step is complete when the Evaluation Coordinator clicks the Invite... button to notify the CEO to take his/her self-evaluation.

Complete the CEO Self-Evaluation

This step is complete when the person being evaluated completes the survey.

Share the CEO Self-Evaluation Report with the Board

This step is complete when the coordinator shares the self-evaluation results with all board members. It is recommended, though not required, that this be done before requesting the board to take their evaluation surveys.

3. Evaluation

Start the Evaluation

This step is complete when the evaluation coordinator invites board members and/or direct reports to take their CEO evaluation.

Complete the Evaluation of the CEO

This step is complete when all participants complete their surveys.

4. Report

Share the CEO Evaluation Report with the Board

This step is complete when the coordinator shares the full survey report with all board members.

Note that unlike prior versions of the evaluation, this step does not close the survey for further contributions.

5. Documentation

Create and Upload the CEO Memo

This step is complete when the committee chair drafts memo for the CEO and uploads it to the documentation area.

Finalize the CEO Memo

This step is complete when the CEO Support and Evaluation Committee facilitates a full board session to review the memo and the evaluation details. The board takes a formal vote to approve the memo and agrees to speak with one voice to the CEO.

Share the CEO Memo with the CEO

This step is complete when the CEO Support and Evaluation Committee and the CEO meet to review the memo and collaborate to refine goals and introduce the CEO's personal professional development goals for the year.

6. Goals

Draft the Goals

This step is complete when the CEO drafts goals for next year, gets feedback from board committees where appropriate, and meets again with the CEO Support and Evaluation Committee to review.

This step must be manually marked complete.

Approve the Goals

This step is complete when the full board ratifies the final goals after the CEO presents them.

This step must be manually marked complete.

From start to finish, this process should take your team about 90 days to complete.

BoardOnTrack is set up to automatically schedule each stage based on your evaluation process start date. You can customize these dates as needed.
