Answers to Common Questions about the CEO Evaluation

Our CEO oversees multiple schools rather than a single school. Will this evaluation tool work for us?

The full range of types of charter schools and charter management organizations use BoardOnTrack. And this evaluation is built to fit you at every stage, from single-site to CMO.

For instance: you might want to add some custom questions focused on your CEO's role in growing the organization. When transitioning from a single school to a multi-school organization, the CEO's job transitions as well. They're going from being the person actually doing most of the things mentioned in the CEO Evaluation to being the person who hires a team and delegates those tasks to other people.

In this sort of organizational transition, the board's role where the CEO evaluation is concerned will also go through a transition. They'll shift from evaluating how the CEO is personally doing those tasks, to evaluating how the CEO is doing hiring smart people to do these tasks.

While these changes are challenging for any board and CEO, the BoardOnTrack CEO evaluation continues to be an extremely important and useful tool in helping the board evaluate the CEO, improving the board's understanding of the CEO's role as it changes, and strengthing the board-CEO partnership.

Can the report be amended after the evaluation is completed?

Once everyone’s answers have been submitted, they cannot be changed.

If someone accidentally submits their response, they can go in and edit their own responses before the coordinator closes the evaluation.

But, once the coordinator has closed the evaluation, no responses can be changed.

Are the responses really kept anonymous?

We understand that the CEO Evaluation is a sensitive topic. We make every effort to retain as much anonymity as possible and to ensure that the information is accessible to only those that should have access to it.

The coordinator can see which participants have responded. But not what they said.

And, if less than half the board's members have responded, the report will not show any data. That way, we ensure that a report is not generated if there’s not enough data to protect respondents’ anonymity.

  • Only board members have access to any of the reports.
  • The CEO's survey responses can be viewed by the board.
  • No one can view an individual board member's survey responses.
  • No one can view an individual direct report's survey responses.
  • Anonymity is maintained by only allowing results to be shared once there is a minimum of 2 responses. For the board's surveys, this will not be a problem. However, for direct reports, you need 2 fully completed surveys to have their results included.

Can we use this to also evaluate individual school leaders within our CMO?

The CEO evaluation is designed to evaluate the top executive of your organization. The board’s role is only to evaluate the CEO who reports to them; not the senior staff who report to the CEO.

But, the process will ask for you to evaluate your CEO’s performance in managing those individual school leaders.

And, your CEO certainly could take a page from our book, and use our questions as inspiration for their own evaluations of their executive direct reports?

Is there a way to incorporate an executive coaching program into this evaluation process?

BoardOnTrack is designed to support both the board and the CEO. A significant amount of our resources and trainings are built for both groups. And we look forward to continuing to build even more executive support & training to help boards help their CEOs do their jobs even better.
