Introduction
On March 31, 2022, BoardOnTrack released its new, fully customizable CEO evaluation survey technology. Please note that any CEO evaluation started on or before that date will continue with the old evaluation through completion, including using the old report.
As part of our new evaluation, we have introduced a new, improved report format. If you've used the BoardOnTrack Board Assessment Report, the new evaluation report will look very familiar to you.
Improvements include:
- Providing a survey summary and response details on the same page.
- Showing graphically where the Board, Staff, CEO, and all individuals (anonymized) answered each question. This allows you to see not just the average response as you could before, but also how much diversity there was in your team's responses.
- Improved consistency between the questions and the report. They now both show exactly the same response scales.
Using the Report
Perhaps the most significant feature of our new CEO evaluation is how flexible it is. You can customize the standard BoardOnTrack survey as little or as much as you like and even enter your own survey. The screenshots below will use the standard, included survey, though the basic layout will be similar regardless of your customizations.
Controls, Participants, and Schedule
The top of the report screen will look like this.
At the very top, just below the name of the evaluation are the controls (Individuals, Groups, and Me) which allow you to view more or less detail in the lower sections. Note that those controls will stay on the screen even when you scroll to lower sections, and I'll explain how to use these in the next sections of this document
Below that, you'll find the name of the evaluation survey (Ted Williams 2021-2022 Survey in the screenshot above) and the avatars of everyone invited to take part in the evaluation. The avatars with the green checkmarks represent people who completed the survey and whose responses are included in the report.
Below that are the details about when the evaluation was conducted and who is being evaluated.
Legend and Summary
Many years ago in a distant land, there was a wizard who lived alone... Oh, wait...sorry....different kind of legend.
What I meant to say was that next, you'll find the legend which explains the graphics used in the report, and under that is the summary. An individual's responses will always be represented by the person icon, and the average response for the board and the staff are represented by the pill shapes. Use the controls to turn those graphics on or off depending on the level of granularity you wish to see. You can also toggle the Me control on to highlight your own responses.
Below the legend is the summary. The Summary view aggregates all the responses in each Radio Choice Grid component (see this article if you've forgotten what that is). No other component type is included in the summary.
Sometime in April, 2022, we will enhance this view so that clicking on the topic in the summary (Demonstrates Integrity, etc. above) will bring you directly to the details for that grid.
The graphical display of this data makes it easy to see the "big picture" while also giving you the ability to dig into details where appropriate. In the screenshot above, for example, it's clear that the staff does not view the CEO as positively as the board and the CEO himself do.
Details
Below the summary, you'll find the detailed responses for each component of the report. The example below shows how details are presented for all question components.
- Multiple Choice Question. How often do you interact...
- Radio Choice Grid. The Demonstrates Integrity table.
- Rich Text Area. Comments or examples...
You use the same controls as before to control what you see so you get the level of detail you need. The example above has the Individuals control enabled so you can see individuals' ratings and comments. In this case, you can see that two board members (green icons) and two staff members (yellow icons) have taken the survey.
In this example, the details view is important, as you can see that the two board members disagree strongly in their evaluation of the CEO. This would, of course, warrant discussion at a board meeting or CEO Support and Evaluation Committee meeting.
You can also see that free-text responses are identified only by the contributor's role - subject, board, or staff - so anonymity is maintained. We will also only show the free-text responses and the individual icons if there is more than one person of that type represented in the results. Again, this is to keep the response anonymous.
