Prerequisites for running a CEO Evaluation

Before beginning your CEO Evaluation in BoardOnTrack, make sure you've checked off these five things.

1. Be sure your CEO is set up to use BoardOnTrack.

Your CEO will need to be able to log into BoardOnTrack to complete their self-evaluation.

If needed, your BoardOnTrack Admin can add the CEO.

2. Create a CEO Support and Evaluation Committee and name its chair.

Who will likely run air traffic control, and coordinate the evaluation, for your governance team this year? Is it your board chair, or maybe a committee chair?

We recommend that every board have a CEO Support & Evaluation Committee. Most likely, the chair of that committee would lead this process.

If you don’t have a CEO Support & Evaluation Committee, your Governance Committee might lead this process, or perhaps a board member who has HR experience.

You may use a different name for your committee as long as the Committee Type is set to "CEO Support And Eval."

BoardOnTrack adds a committee of this type automatically. If you've renamed it or deleted it, ask your BoardOnTrack Admin to add that committee or check the existing type.

3. Name a CEO Evaluation Coordinator ("CEC") to manage your process.

The board will assign a member of the CEO Support and Evaluation Committee to be the CEO Evaluation Coordinator. This person manages the overall process.

Your BoardOnTrack admin can assign the CEO Evaluation Coordinator permission. Follow the same steps for adding or managing your other BoardOnTrack users.

4. All board members' accounts are active in BoardOnTrack.

Each board member will need to be able to log into BoardOnTrack to complete their evaluation responses.

All of your board members should already be set up to use BoardOnTrack. If they aren't, ask your BoardOnTrack Admin to add them as soon as possible and ensure that they set up their account.

5. Direct reports' accounts are active in BoardOnTrack.

Many boards include direct reports in what's often called a 360-degree evaluation. Direct reports are employees whose positions are directly below that of the CEO or who is managed by the CEO.

If you plan for direct reports to evaluate the CEO, they'll also need to be set up to log into BoardOnTrack.

If needed, your BoardOnTrack admin can add them, just as they would have done for any other members of your governance team. And, your Admin will know how to appropriately set their BoardOnTrack permissions.

And make sure that the CEO, board members, and any direct reports who are participating in the CEO Evaluation, have already successfully logged in to BoardOnTrack at least once.
